The oldest estate in the Medoc appellation, the Chateau de Lamarque is almost a thousand years old dating back to when Garison de Lamarque built the original fortified castle between 1050 and 1090 to thwart Viking invasions and his cousin, Gaubert de Fumel, was taking part in the Crusades. Driven by Marie-Louise d' Evry and her husband Roger Gromand, the 1960s heralded the reawakening and a true Renaissance of La Marque with new vine plantings and the renovation & development of new facilities to suit the times. Soon after, Pierre Gilles and Marie Helene Gromande brought new energy to the project by rethinking the basics of respecting nature, ensuring the quality of the grape varieties & their rootstock are adapted to the soil, and a slow wine making process with an extended maturation period is upheld. Today, the Lamarque & Fumel descendants comprise the 25th generation of this family estate's long & rich history. The 2016 Lamarque has a refined bouquet with gorgeous blackberry, cedar, and pressed flower aromas that blossom beautifully in the glass. Ripe & generous with a lovely freshness & elegant balance, it is medium bodied on the palate with robust & firm tannins and pure fruit characters ensconced within a wonderfully integrated structure. It delivers a delightful & vibrant pencil box tinged finish with a long, mineral graphite aftertaste.
Chateau de Lamarque wine is a fairly solid, full bodied Haut-Medoc, matured for at least a year in barriques of which 30% are new. After a few years bottle age to soften the tannins, the wine takes on a velvety taste in which spicy oak and blackcurrants generally play a leading part.
