Why We Love This Wine
Kanonkop Winery is a 4th generation family owned estate situated below the Simonsberg mountain near Table Bay. Planted for red grapes only with some vines as old as 60 years old, aging of their wines for 12 to 24 months in French Oak barriques is the established norm here. As part of their sustainable farming advocacy, discarded unripe grapes and wastes from juice extraction are recycled & used as compost for their vines. 3 of their legendary winemakers have created part of their terroir with their interaction in how the vines are pruned, harvested, & worked over for generations. Soil, climate, & other aspects combine to place a fingerprint of individuality on the ripe grapes where the winemaker's role is to capture this expression of nature & steer it through vinification, maturation, & bottling. Comprising a minimum 30% Pinotage component, this element is rounded off with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, & Merlot all aged in oak resulting in an opulent red wine offering an array of red & black fruit flavors underscored by depth & complexity.
