Born in Germany, Wolfgang Franz Otto Blass often ran away from school. After being given an ultimatum, Blass began a 3-year winemaking apprenticeship. This is where the Wolf Blass story begins. In 1957 he studied Champagne techniques in France and soon became the youngest person to ever graduate with a Masters in Oenology from Veitshoechheim-Wuerzburg. Then in 1959 he moved to England where he studied the art of blending. Finally, in 1961 he moved to Barossa Valley and established Wolf Blass wines in 1966. Blass decided on the eagle as the wineries image by happy coincidence. The piece of land he set up on was on Bilyara Road which he discovered was the name for “Eaglehawk'' in Aboriginee. As the eagle was the national emblem of Germany, he decided it was a fitting image for his wines. Today, Wolf Blass Wines is one of the most successful and awarded wineries in Australia. With a strong focus on meticulous fruit selection, fermentation in state-of-the-art open vessels, small batch, experimental winemaking, and maturation in fine oak barrels, the wines consistently deliver lifted vibrant fruit flavors and soft-rounded palates.
