Clos de Vougeot is one of the most famous Grand Cru Vineyards (highest quality plots) in Burgundy. It is the largest Grand Cru site in the Cote de Nuits sub-region covering 50 hectares of land. The 6th generation Ponelle Winemaking family's involvement in the Burgundy Wine trade began in 1870 when founder Pierre-Lazare Ponnelle diligently researched the winemaking fermentation processes which eventually led to a collaboration with Louis Pasteur who was living in Dole at the time not far from Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy. They practice traditional, organic farming where the vines are still planted, cultivated, & tended to by hand. Following biological agriculture & bio-dynamism, their vine treatments are all-natural using "contact treatments" made from infusions of plants such as valerian, nettles, & garlic to keep the soils & the vines thriving producing well-balanced grapes year after year. Ruby red in color, the nose opens up with redolent aromas of red berries with milk chocolate nuances. On the palate, red berry, licorice, & milk chocolate characters emerge balanced out by a light acidity & mild tannins. Enjoy this wine with Duck a l'Orange, Roast Goose, and Game birds such as Pheasant & Wild Grouse.
Showing ruby red color hues typical of Pinot Noirs, this wine shows off berry & chocolate aromas followed by flavors of berries, spice, & chocolate with a light & soft acidity and tannic structure.
