The principle behind their flagship wine is decidedly simple: it is unapologetically Montelena. With over 40 years of experience in this dynamic & distinctive vineyard, they've recognized the value of blazing their own trail outsie of others' conventions & norms. It takes confidence in their land as well as their people, farming, & winemaking to buck the trends of fads that perpetually morph & meander throughout the wine world. Most of all, they set the standard for themselves, not relative to the rest of Napa Valley or vintage expectations, but based on their own potential & drive to make their wine better every year. It's a bit risky and is certainly not the path of least resistance but it is inherently in their DNA, their legacy, & their future. Deep garnet in color with purple hues, this red opens up with profound black & red currant cordial notes over an undercurrent of sage & Indian spices, chargrill, chalky scorched earth, tobacco, cedar, & bay leaves. This wine displays wonderful intensity & depth in the mouth with a firm frame of grainy tannins and compelling freshness leading to a long & layered finish. Pair this wine with a nice, juicy steak, beef stew, or even wild pheasant or duck.
This wine displays classic notes of raspberry jam, mocha, and a subtle hint of baking spices revealing lush aromas of toasty cedar, crme de cassis, and fresh blackberry with further airing. On the palate, the signature complex interplay of sweet French oak, subtle earthy characters, and a chewy minerality segues into a clean & fresh mid-palate of rhubarb pie, strawberry candy, and trace hints of smoky espresso that further intensifies with more time in the glass. The refreshing acidity, well-rounded tannins, & intense fruit all converge seamlessly in a deeply lingering & complex finish.
