Domaine des Epeneux (aka Domaine Comte Armand) acquired its name from the vineyard Clos des Epeneux, a Premier Cru Monopole vineyard in Pommard. Since 1850, the estate had been a 1 vineyard domaine until 1994 when a few other vineyards were added to their portfolio. This 5.3 hectare Clos des Epeneux Monopole vineyard is one of the most highly prized Grand Cru Vineyards in Pommard situated between the Les Grand Epenots and the Les Petite Epenots. The grapes grown here come from mature vines planted from 1930 to 1986 and they derive their singular character from the unique terroir of brown clay soil with a hard limestone sub-surface layer here. All wines made here are aged for 18 to 24 months in older oak barrels and are certified organic as well as biodynamically cultivated. Clear fruity expressions of dark cherry, red plums, and blueberry compote are immediately evident in this well made wine. The palate is even keeled & replete with the juicy ripeness of dark fruit, powder fine tannins, and a firm acid backbone that ushers the fruit forward through to a pleasant finish.
A combination of rich, dark fruit, wild berry, & exotic wood spice characters define this wine with a muscular body, grippy tannins, and a good acid structure.
