Bernard Gros, whose vineyards edge into Domaine dela Romanee-Conti, produces produces wines in a similar style to his brother Michel, but the very different terroir in his vineyards results in wines with substantially more power. His quality emanates from the fact that he owns top quality parcels in each appellation. His Clos Vougeot-Musigni for example is at the apex of the Cru just beneath the slope of Musigni. One of the more conscientious wine producers in the region, Bernard strictly limits his harvest yield amounts for the flavor depth & the fruit concentration he seeks, where his wines are only lightly refined but never filtered. Gros Frere wines are deep & dark with a known penchant for their expressive aromatics, their larger structure, and firm backbone requiring added ageing time in the bottle. This Grand Cru is located above the village of Flagey-Echezeaux, between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanee. The Echezeaux cuts the entire slope between Clos de Vougeot and the Vosne-Romanee Premier Crus. It is made up of a mosaic of soils: gravel, marl, silt, & sand perfectly exposed to the rising sun. A slightly more elegant & equally complex nose offers up spiced plum and dark currant fruit scents along with violet & lavender floral aromas. The medium weight flavors possess a velvety mouthfeel that gently caresses the palate leading to a dusty, sappy, & mildly tangy finish. This is a seriously well-structured wine that will need a few more years of cellaring with a prime drinking window of 12 to 15 years from 2029 onwards.
Deep, powerful, fleshy, this is a great Burgundy that will further evolve in complexity to reflect more evident leather & spice notes. The robe is ruby in color with shades of magenta & purple-violet tints. When mature, the bouquet is expressive of animal elements & spice characters of undergrowth & prune further evolving to manifest musk, leather, fur, & mushroom characters. The firm attack on the palate is pleasantly balanced out by soft tannins and a delicious roundness in its mouthfeel.
