Why We Love This Wine

The Ampeau family have been skilled winegrowers for generations - for them, wine is a question of passion and considered an art form. Domaine Robert Ampeau, located in the sub-region of Puligny-Montrachet, counts domaine holdings spanning 10 hectares of vineyards, including land in 10 Premier Crus, 4 of which are in Meursault while the others are scattered around Puligny, Beaune, Blagny, & Savigny. Robert's methods in the vineyards were often considered innovative: he was one of the 1st winemakers in Burgundy to allow other plants to grow in between the rows of vines to encourage the vine roots to burrow deeper into the soil in search of water & nutrients. Wines from Domaine Robert Ampeau are not released for sale to the public until they are deemed ready for consumption - this aligns with Robert's ethos of showing respect for their product. Despite this practice, the wines released for sale are still notable for their youth & clarity. Being very difficult to find old vintages of Burgundy these days, Ampeau's logic offers some of the greatest Burgundian drinking experiences without the long wait. Exhibiting mature aromas & flavors, the nose is spicy & earthy with exotic spices & herbal scents coming to mind. On the palate, rich dark plums & sour cherry flavors emerge amidst a backdrop of soft & velvety tannins, a delicate texture, and a good acid bite at the finish. Pair this wine with Forest Mushroom Soup, Portobello Mushroom & Garlic Chorizo Antipasti, Porcini Mushroom & Buratta Lasagna, and Shitake Mushroom & Prosciutto Pasta.

Winemaker / Tasting Notes

Inviting aromas & a solidly structured palate with dark berry fruit & earthy undertones punctuated by fine tannins & a balanced acidity that has softened quite a bit with extensive time in the bottle.
