Why We Love This Wine

Domaine Francois Gaunoux is a renowned Cote d' Or family estate consisting of about 10 hectares of prime vineyard land. The Gaunoux family has been living in this area since the 16th century. Francois, the son of famous Pommard winemaker Henri Gaunoux, has been working the vines since he was 15 years old. An avante garde winemaker now in his late eighties, he had a visionary sense to combine modernism with traditional viticulture which is a philosophy still currently espoused by the youngest generation today. Their grapes are cultivated with know-how and techniques passed down from generation to generation and are still traditionally harvested by hand between September & October. Domaine Francois Gaunoux owns 3 of the most famous place names or "climats" in Pommard: Rugiens, Epenots, and Grand Epenots. This elegant & straightforward Pommard Premier Cru has an expressive bouquet of red & black fruits on the nose accompanied by floral accents & savory animal elements with trace nuances of herbs & spice. On the palate, it displays a lovely finesse with an abundance of fresh fruit & great balance.

Winemaker / Tasting Notes

Francois Gaunoux is probably one of Burgundy's best kept secrets as the current Chief Winemaker, Claudine Gaunoux, rarely gives interviews and doesn't do PR. Reviewers also do not have access to the castle which owns the abvsolute best fields in Pommard, Meursault, Volnay, & Beaune. Claudine believes in storing their wines exclusively in steel tanks as she feels wooden barrels run counter to their purely terroir driven winemaking philosophy. The resulting wine shows predominant dark fruit characters with a well-balanced acid structure & a firm tannic backbone. You definitely need to decant this for a couple of hours before serving.
