Kanonkop Winery is a 4th generation family owned estate situated below the Simonsberg mountain near Table Bay. Planted for red grapes only with some vines as old as 60 years old, aging of their wines for 12 to 24 months in French Oak barriques is the established norm here. As part of their sustainable farming advocacy, discarded unripe grapes and wastes from juice extraction are recycled & used as compost for their vines. 3 of their legendary winemakers have created part of their terroir with their interaction in how the vines are pruned, harvested, & worked over for generations. Soil, climate, & other aspects combine to place a fingerprint of individuality on the ripe grapes where the winemaker's role is to capture this expression of nature & steer it through vinification, maturation, & bottling. A crossing of the Pinot Noir & Cinsault (once known as Hermitage) bacame Pinotage, a red-blooded South African grape variety that originated there. Deep garnet with a purple hue, this wine offers plush plum & cherry flavors with an evocative hint of spice. With further bottle ageing, it gains an earthy, forest floor character with a delectable cassis like, sweet-fruited core.
Top notes of flowers & fynbos on the nose with layers of pure fruit flavors on the palate while providing a lovely balance between a bright acid character & fine powder tannins.
