Why We Love This Wine

The Mitolo family migrated to Australia bringing their viticultural ancestry and an ethos belonging to the Abruzzo region - "forte e genile" or strong & gentle. Frank Mitolo eventually started making wines but just for family & friends. In 1999, Frank got together with winemaker Ben Glaetzer fashioning a dream of making the ultimate expression of Mclaren Vale's rich provenance of soils encapsulated in 6 words: individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance, & power. With 17 wines now in their range, the winery works closely with its Italian immigrant growers, the Loprestis, who have developed an affinity for the land producing optimal quality fruit. The depth of flavor garnered from the heavy clay soils buoyed by freshness from the afternoon sea breezes is the essence of Mitolo. They take a hands off approach in wine development using cool fermentation to retain purity and utilizing a range of barrel coopers to generate complexity while respecting & enhancing the fruit. Clear deep ruby with a bright ruby rim, it evokes fragrant & clearly defined black currant, bramble, cedar, & tobacco characters on the nose. Silken, savory, & medium bodied on the palate, flavors of ripe cassis followed by a complex mix of savory cigar box, brambles, & earthy undergrowth revealing higher toned red fruit notes with further airing. A lovely spine of acidity runs down this elegantly proportioned and very moreish Cabernet Sauvignon with Claret like weight & finesse. Pair this with Roast Lamb & Marble Potatoes.

Winemaker / Tasting Notes

Very fragrant & clearly defined aromas of cedar & tobacco with black currant & bramble flavors lead to a clean & well balanced finish.
