Alvaro Palacios is undoubtedly one of the most important & influential winemakers in Spain who has emerged after he cut his teeth initially in the legendary Chateau Petrus where he also developed his winemaking philosophy. His pioneering efforts in Priorat have secured the region's reputation for being able to produce fine wines of profound character & quality. Descendientes de J. Palacios is a leading producer of red wines from the Mencia grape in the Bierzo region of northwest Spain. It was founded in 1998 as a collaboration between Alvaro Palacios & his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios bringing greater prominence to the Bierzo Region, a hilly area where the Palacios vineyards are located on steep hillsides with old bush vines. These wines are low yielding producing concentrated wines famous for their juicy, dark fruit characters & mineral hints.
The 2013 Moncerbal is produced from different plots in the same village of Corullon. It is juicy & crystalline with the energy of the quartz intermingled with the clay & marble soils. On the palate, it is focused & incredibly tasty with great symmetry & balance, impressive depth, and a nuanced complexity showing just the right amount of acidity & tannins.
