Winemaker / Tasting Notes
In this small (29 ha.) vineyard only the most select Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. These are used to make strictly limited quantities of Torres’ most prestigious red wine, now known to connoisseurs all over the world. In the Paris Wine Olympiad, the 1970 vintage triumphed over some of the most famous wines in the world, including some of the best from Bordeaux. This success has been repeated on several other occasions, with Gran Coronas Mas La Plana notching up numerous other international awards. 2011 was a rainy year, and although temperatures were generally normal, the start to the vegetative cycle was very cold and rainy, and the ripening period very hot and dry. The vegetative cycle experienced irregular rainfall: the first half of the cycle was very rainy, and the second half was very dry. In terms of temperature, the vegetative cycle started out cold, especially as far as highs were concerned (3ºC below average), and ended up hot (with 1ºC above-average nighttime lows).
