Winemaker / Tasting Notes
Founded in 1961 when 21 year old George Fistonich leased 5 acres of land in Mangere Auckland, New Zealand producing the 1st vintage of Villa Maria from grapes harvested from his block in 1962. Today, Villa Maria grows 28 different grape varieties and exports wine to over 60 countries worldwide. As a firm advocate of sustainable farming, they take conscious steps towards zero waste, reducing carbon emissions, & transitioning their vineyards to produce organic wines. When you taste Villa Maria wines, you taste the care they put into the soil & the tending of the vines, the careful handling of the fruit produced, and the respect for their relationship with the land. As Founder George Fistonich so adequately put it: "As a family company, the desire to leave something for the next generation is an ever present and overriding business objective." Displaying a rich ruby red robe with shiny dark red reflections, the nose evinces an expressive bouquet punctuated by black currant & juicy cherry aromas with hints of cedar wood. On the palate, the red blend reveals an abundance of ripe cassis fruit, cedarwood spice, & fine grained tannins leading to a soft, smooth, and lengthy finish.
