In 1822, George Smith learned his craft on the remote and isolated Livet valley, hidden from customs officers and soldiers. This gave him the time to distil slowly, making a whiskey that would be loved around the world. In August 1822, King George IV arrived in Scotland for a state visit, and despite it being illegal, asked for a sip of Glenlivet whiskey. Then in 1824 with the change of legislation, George Smith set out to become the first legal distillery in the parish of Glenlivet and carried around pistols as protection from aggravated colleagues who were still distilling illegally.

Nevertheless, by the late 1830’s, the Glenlivet distillery was producing more than 200 gallons a week. They were so well-known that others tried to capitalize on their name by naming their distilleries Glenlivet. The distillery fought for the rights and were able to have sole use of the name “The Glenlivet”, however, other brands could still use Glenlivet on their bottles.

The Glenlivet 12YO epitomizes the kind of soft, smooth, and lighter style of Speyside single malts. Boasting a delicate balance of sweet summer fruits and spring flowers, you can also find aromas of pineapple, pear, toasted cereal, and honey. The Glenlivet 15YO gets its distinctive rich and exotic character from a process of selective maturation in which a proportion of the spirit is matured in French oak casks.
