How is sparkling wine made?

If you’ve ever wondered what makes wine sparkling, it is a second round of fermentation—meaning that after grape juice and pulp has been fermented into wine, it is fermented again to create carbonation. Today, there are many kinds of sparkling wine made through many different methods such as the labor-intensive Traditional Method (also known as the Methode Champenoise, where wine is made to undergo secondary fermentation per individual bottle) used in Champagne, Cremant, and Cava. Also common is the Tank Method, where the wine undergoes fermentation and is then bottles—typically used for Prosecco.

Types of sparkling wine:

  • Champagne : Easily the most famous kind of sparkling wine there is, Champagne is sparkling wine produced exclusively in Champagne, France out of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and/or Pinot Meunier. It is made under very strict regulation. It’s famous all over the world for its fine, persistent bubbles (made through the labor-intensive Traditional Method), its signature notes of citrus and toast, and its creamy texture.
  • Cava: Also made using the Traditional Method, Cava is a Spanish sparkling wine made using indigenous grapes such as Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarello. It’s known for its fruitier flavors and crisp bubbles—perfect for pairing with tapas and paella!
  • Prosecco: Known for its fruity characters and high acidity, Prosecco (made from Glera) is one of the most famous kinds of sparkling wine in the world. Originally from Italy, it is also controversially produced in Australia. It uses the less labor-intensive Tank Method to produce its bubbles, which makes it a more affordable alternative to Champagne and Cava.
  • Crémant: While unfamiliar to many, Cremant is a French sparkling wine made using the same Traditional Method as Champagne, but is made outside the famous area and using non-traditional grapes such as Pinot Gris and Chenin Blanc. The grapes (and resulting taste) depend on the region, and Crémant is produced in Alsace, Bourgogne, the Loire Valley, Limoux, Bordeaux, Jura, Rhone Valley, and Savoie.
  • Sparkling Moscato: Moscato by itself refers to a sweet, low-alcohol wine made of Muscat Blanc grapes, but many of its iterations are sparkling. If it comes from its original province of Asti, Italy, it is referred to as Moscato d’Asti, and is always frizzante or semi-sparkling. Made outside of the region, it is simply Sparkling Moscato if it is crafted with carbonation.
  • Sparkling Rosé: The very food-friendly Rosé (or Rosato) style of wine is typically designed to be still, but making it sparkling enhances the sheer number of dishes it pairs well with. It is most popularly made with grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, and Tempranillo

Make any occasion that extra bit more special with a bottle of sparkling wine. No matter your budget, we offer a selection of top-quality and high-value sparkling wines at every price. So whether you’re celebrating a wedding, graduation, Noche Buena, or just want to make the night feel more special, you can find your ideal bottle in the selection above.

Shop for Cava, Prosecco, and Champagne sparkling wines from top brands like Moët & Chandon, Valdivieso, and Printhie Wines. Best enjoyed as an aperitif with family and friends to kickstart your celebration. But if you want to enjoy your sparkling wine with food as well, you can. We recommend keeping the food relatively light to avoid overpowering the wine.

Some of the Winery.ph team's suggestions are fish and chips or smoked salmon with the Taittinger Champagne, fresh seafood with the Bash Sparkling Rosé, and the Romio Prosecco with oysters or sushi. If you want to try a more unique combination, sparkling wines can also be paired with fried foods such as fried chicken or fried mushrooms as well as mac and cheese since their higher acidity can act as a palate cleanser.

So if you’re looking to take your occasion — whatever it may be - up a level, order a bottle or a few of sparkling wine to add that extra touch. No matter how many bottles you purchase, our team will safely deliver them to you anywhere in the Philippines.
