What makes white wine different from red wine?

By definition, white wine is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting wine grapes without their skins on. To do the process with the skins on turns wine red and gives it tannins; doing it without makes the wine white and leaves it without tannins. White wine also tends to have more distinctively high acidities than red wines, and exhibits more flavors of citrus and tropical fruits.

Types of white wine

There are over a hundred white wine varieties grown around the world, but before you buy any wines in the Philippines, it’s good to know what makes each one different from the others. Here are some of the most popular kinds of white wine you should know:

  • Chardonnay: Chardonnay is easily the most widely-produced white wine in the world, not just because the grape it’s made from is easy to grow, but also because of the sheer variety of styles it can be made into. Chardonnay can be oaky and creamy, as in styles from California, USA; it can also be crisp and mineral, like those from Chablis, France. It is also the main grape used in the famous sparkling wine of Champagne!
  • Sauvignon Blanc: Known for its crisp acidity and grassy, herbaceous flavors, Sauvignon Blanc is a dream pairing with most seafood dishes, especially kinilaw and ceviche. Marlborough, New Zealand and Sancerre, France are regions famous for producing this aromatic white wine
  • Pinot Grigio: Pinot Grigio is a beginner-friendly wine known for its citrusy flavors, bright acidity, and food-friendliness. While this white wine is originally from Italy, it also goes by the name Pinot Gris when it is made in the more unctuous French style with honey notes.
  • Moscato: Known for its sweet flavors and low alcohol levels, Moscato is one of the most popular white wines in the Philippines. While it originates in Italy (and is particularly famous in its Asti region), Moscato from Australia, Spain, and the United States are also making a name for themselves producing this sweet white wine.
  • Riesling: Riesling is a crisp and aromatic white wine made with many varying levels of sugar, from dry to off-dry to even very sweet! It’s become a very popular pairing with Asian cuisine, from dimsum to pad thai. It’s most popularly produced in Germany, Australia, and the United States.
  • Chenin Blanc: Though originally from France, Chenin Blanc is best known as South Africa’s star white wine. Like Chardonnay, it’s also versatile and made in many different styles, but has distinctive notes of ginger, pears, and florals!

Although red wine has been more popular in the Philippines, white wine is gaining popularity. When temperatures start to rise in the summer months, white wine — especially when chilled — is a refreshing choice perfect for sipping at the beach or at home.

Sauvignon Blanc, with its higher acidity and more herbaceous flavors, pairs well with fish that has a tangy sauce or with inihaw na pusit. Pinot Grigio on the other hand is more dry with medium to high acidity and pairs nicely with raw seafood such as kinilaw. But what about dishes that have a creamy base? This is where Chardonnay wines come in. Exhibiting flavors of vanilla and oak, Chardonnay has creaminess that pairs well with creamier dishes like mushroom pasta or chicken alfredo.

No matter if you like more dry white wines or sweet white wines, you’ll find them all in our curated selection above. The Winery.ph team has carefully selected each white wine to ensure that each wine will suit the Filipino palate and suit the Filipino climate. These are all then stored in an airconditioned warehouse to ensure they are of the best quality when we deliver them to your doorstep.
