Why We Love This Wine
Bernard Gros, whose vineyards edge into Domaine dela Romanee-Conti, produces produces wines in a similar style to his brother Michel, but the very different terroir in his vineyards results in wines with substantially more power. His quality emanates from the fact that he owns top quality parcels in each appellation. His Clos Vougeot-Musigni for example is at the apex of the Cru just beneath the slope of Musigni. One of the more conscientious wine producers in the region, Bernard strictly limits his harvest yield amounts for the flavor depth & the fruit concentration he seeks, where his wines are only lightly refined but never filtered. Gros Frere wines are deep & dark with a known penchant for their expressive aromatics, their larger structure, and firm backbone requiring added ageing time in the bottle. Highly sought after by those who know this as a declassified Grand Cru Echezeaux from the younger vines. The spice elements are more varied although the spiced black cherry & cassis fruit profile is similar. The sleek, intense, & more precise medium weight flavors possess a nicely refined mouthfeel while delivering surprisingly excellent length on its moderately firm finish. This wine need to develop better depth but it may well achieve that with careful cellaring of at least a few more years.
Winemaker / Tasting Notes
Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru (without the addition of a "climat" name)presents a very dark black cherry color. The nose offers a complex bouquet with aromas of undergrowth, blackberries, & leather with some peppery notes. In the mouth, the body is dense and the tannins show an attractive velvety refinement. This wine should be allowed to age for a few years to let it express its full potential.
