After arriving from England, Edward Tyrrell takes up 320 acres of land in Hunter Valley and begins to plant Shiraz and Semillon vines. He harvested the grapes for his first vintage in 1864. Flash forward to 1954, Murray Tyrrell takes over the winemaking duties and sets out to formalize efforts to build the winery’s value while promoting visits to the winery for tasting and sales. In 1961, Murray created the Private Bin system. This was where fruit from the best vineyard blocks was matured in individual oak barrels or vats, with the resulting wines named after the vats from which they came. Four years later, and with the help of Len Evans, he created the Winemaker's Selection range which represents the best wines of each vintage. In 1968, Murray planted the first Chardonnay on Tyrrell’s property using cuttings from Penfolds owned HVD vineyards. The resulting wine, Vat 47 Chardonnay, becomes Australia’s first commercial Chardonnay. Tyrrell’s was also the pioneer of Pinot Noir in Australia: planting 2 acres in 1972, which were the first commercial plantings of the variety in Hunter Valley.
