The Majella Estate has gone through a long period of transformation from primarily a pastural land for sheep starting in the 1960s, a grape grower for the Wynn's Coonawarra Estate in the 1980s & early 1990s, and finally establishing their own winery in 1996 producing their 1st crackerjack vintage in 1999 under the auspices of Chief Winemaker Bruce Gregory. The Estate produces primarily Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, & Riesling varietals. The Malleea, a native Aboriginal word for "green paddock", is a fine paragon of the classic Australian Cabernet/Shiraz blend. A rich, dark magenta in color, the nose evokes ripe plum, spice, & vanillin oak aromas. On the palate, it reveals complex fruit cake characters with layers of fresh berry fruit, black olives, & chocolate hints.
The 2015 "The Malleea" has a dark magenta color with a bright purple hue. On the nose, lush mulberry, black currant, blackberry, and vanilla oak characters are revealed. On the palate, it is silky with finely structured tannins revealing cassis, plums, & spice characters with minty undertones. Subtle oak notes further enhance its luscious finish.
