The Magnien family has been producing wine in Burgundy since 1656, where even the ancient Pinot Noir clone (Pinot Noir Magnien) has survived in their vineyards. Some of these vines are as old as 70 to 100 years old giving their wines an unusual strength & sharpness. Over the past several years, nearly 90% of their vineyards have been converted to organic viticulture. Situated to the east of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Cazetiers is an 8.43 hectare vineyard on the northern border of the much coveted Clos Saint Jacques. They currently follow a "Reasonably Controlled" Viticulture Philosophy which is serving as their bridge to fully organic farming. Behind its famous neighbor, Les Cazetiers is widely regarded for providing the best Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin. A lovely ruby red in color, excellent ripe black fruit notes are prevalent on the nose with added noble oak hints. On the palate, this wine displays a relaxed elegance & freshness contrasted exquisitely by its underlying power and playful demeanor ultimately culminating in a very long & pleasant finish. Enjoy this now through 2035 with Grilled Duck Breast, Roasted Game Birds (Partridge, Pheasant, Guinea Fowl, Quail), Dishes with Mushrooms & Black Truffles, and Rich "Umami" Dishes.
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers Premier Cru showcases a nose of red & black fruit characters with added vestiges of black olives & black licorice. On the palate, this medium-bodied red manifests fine-grained tannins & a beautiful structure leading to a dark cherry & mineral-laced finish.
